He is trying to kill the Department of Education.
He can't, as Congress has to officially eliminate it, and that won't happen. Even a lot of Republicans don't want it to go away, but still, Trump will dismantle a large portion of it, and the days of 'education for all' are limited.
I won't try to explain the Trump plan, which he insists will keep most things in place. I will instead tell you how this will go (regardless of what they say).
Most of the money geared toward education will be given as a massive cash handout to millionaires and billionaires. The remaining fraction of the funding will be handed over to the states with no guidance on how it should be spent. Forget about Republicans giving it all to wealthy private school kids for their private school tuition. Republicans will take the money and spend it on free yachts for the wealthy, with names like 'School Daze' to give them an extra chuckle.
The schools that will be hardest hit by this will not be the inner city schools, the high minority population areas where Trump voters were told the only cuts would happen (voting to hurt others), but will be rural schools, where the population and tax base won't have the money to cope. School districts will consolidate at a (likely) ratio of 10 districts into 1, leaving many rural families having their kids' school an hour away from their house. Class sizes will be 50/60 to 1, and all the "education" schools will be able to afford to teach is a test, the same test over and over and over and over...
Kids will "graduate" without an adequate education to move on to college, but even if they did, they'd have to pay private banks extraordinary amounts for student loans, student loans which are currently kept affordable because they run through the US Government. College for over 75% of the country will no longer be an option. Instead, buckled by Republicans eagerly dropping the legal working age down to 10 years old, most kids will be forced into minimum-wage, menial work with no chance of advancement, FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIVES!
And all disabled kids will lose all of their funding, meaning public education will no longer be an option.
This will eventually lead to the Republican's ultimate goal, making Education so bad that it becomes viable to privatize education, with corporations making massive profits, while the quality of education gets worse and worse.
They are already saying they will fire everyone who administers the grants to school districts except three people. The idea that three people are going to be able to keep the system afloat is laughable.
Maybe your kid, without any option to attend a viable school, forced into the workforce at a stunningly young age, will eventually get a good tip from the guy parking the 'School Daze' at the marina...maybe.
