The Friday Link for 5/26/17

With Saturday Night Live wrapping up their season,  I decided to revisit something I did last year and post what I think are the best skits from the 16/17 season.

In my opinion, this season was very uneven, so most of these are going be political.  The political stuff was phenomenal, but the non political stuff was really weak, outside of one or two exceptions.

Here are my six best:

#6 - Tom Hanks' Trump supporter shows up on Black Jeopardy.  It doesn't go as you'd expect it would...

#5 - Kellyanne Conway becomes Fatal Attraction to CNN's Jake Tapper.  Kate McKinnon's Kellyanne most seasons would be the best political character, but with two other portrayals coming up, she almost got lost.  This is not a shot at her, rather complimenting what is to come.

#4 - Trump visits the People's Court.  Alec Baldwin's top notch Trump impression is on fine display here, with the jokes evenly sprinkled about.

#3 - The Trump/Clinton Town Hall Debate.  Let's go back to a simpler time as Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon remind us why we will remember their political portrayals as some of the best ever.  A time when we were sure chaos wouldn't win in the end...(sigh)...

#2 - David S. Pumpkins.  Two things about this clip.  First, the guest hosts this year were not as consistent as usual.  Maybe it's because there were so many quality political skits, what might've been a key moment of the night in a past season, become lost this year.  Tom Hanks was clearly the best host of the season and his David S. Pumpkins became a huge hit.

This is one of the rare cases where SNL got away from their more traditional sketch comedy and embraced a 'Kids in the Hall' type of perverse goofiness.  This is in your face, but so subtle at the same time; similar to one of the more surreal skits they ever did, Darrell's House with Zach Galifinakis from a few years back.  If you watch Darrell's House, you have to watch it in order or it makes no sense.  Heck it doesn't make sense until the beginning of the second segment anyway, but then it becomes one of the funniest SNL bits ever.  The payoff at the end of David S. Pumpkins is also top notch.  I wish they would have the guts to try doing this kind of comedy more often.

#1 - Sean Spicer's Press Conference.  I could easily make four of these positions Melissa McCarthy's Sean Spicer impressions.  It is the best political character they've ever done, and yes I know that is going up against their Larry David's Bernie Sanders, Tina Fey's Sarah Palin and Darrel Hammond's Bill Clinton.  It's so perfect.  The rumor is Trump was so angry about the impression he wanted to fire Spicer immediately.  Here's the first one she did.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend everyone!
