After 10 or so years of watching the Daily Show and Colbert in the mornings, it's been pretty quiet lately. Ever since Jon Stewart finished up, it's been really silent, not as much fun.
Being Trevor Noah will stink. There is an old adage in media - You don't want to be the guy who replaces the legend. You want to be the guy who replaced the guy who replaced the living legend. It holds true in all of entertainment (sorry Moose Miller). Much like Larry Willmore, who took over for Colbert, there is going to be a loss of wind in the sails, but Willmore was much better positioned to take over a timeslot of that magnitude. I have some real big concerns about Noah.
Willmore was the "black correspondent" from the Daily Show, with years of top notch bits. His take down of the folks who think the Civil War wasn't about slavery was epic. When he transferred to 10:30 PM, he understood the show had to be his and his alone. His take on the daily news from the African American perspective isn't as witty or polished at Colbert, but it is hilarious when he calls out the racial hypocrisy with his own brand of hosting. He's ramped it up very quickly, becoming a pretty good watch in only a few months.
Trevor Noah has some funny jokes from his stand up days, and the few bits he did do on the Daily Show were somewhat funny, but I was very surprised he got the gig. Considering I felt he was the fourth or fifth choice, he either must have really impressed in the interviews or he was the only one who would take the job. Here's to hoping he got the gig due to his hosting ability.
Then again, it'll all be moot soon. It was going to be tough enough with Fallon, Kimmel and O'Brien to compete with, but with Colbert soon to rule the roost at CBS late night, they'd better have their A game ready.
To give them, and you, a taste of what they are in store for, here's just Colbert cracking up. The last time a late night host gave me giggles by just losing it with he rest of us, it was a guy named Carson. Enjoy.
