Quick reminder: The longest a President can serve in office is 10 years. A President can only be elected twice. If a Vice President rose to the office of president during a term, if they serve less than two years of the remaining term, they can run twice. If they serve more than two years of the term they inherited, then they can only run one more time.
This is the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution.
Trump on Sunday said he was planning on running for a third term. He claims there are ways for him to do so, implying Vance could run, win (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!), and then abdicate the office to Trump. That doesn't explain how he would get beyond the Constitution. And does anyone think Vance would give up the presidency if he somehow won it?
The only way he can do so is to change the Constitution, but they won't be able to, and I also don't think these guys are going to try to work within our current rules.
Pure speculation. Currently, the Republicans are trying to pass two voting laws. The first would be to require 'proof of citizenship.' Republicans sell this as something simple, but the truth is many American citizens do not have ready access to their proof of citizenship, and many others would have to take a ton of time and money to get the proof.
The second law is more nefarious. They want to make it so that women could only vote under their maiden name. If you've been married or changed your name, you can't vote! Add in the 'proof of citizenship' standard and unless a woman has a copy of their birth certificate with 2 federally approved picture IDs with their Maiden name on them, their voting rights are gone.
Trust me, Republicans are chomping at the bit to end women voting.
They'll likely fail at passing both bills. Then it comes down to Martial Law. If Trump and the Republicans see an absolute electoral avalanche coming for them, I'm convinced they'll declare Martial Law, under the argument "You people are too emotional right now. We are going to hold off on the election until you people can calm down a little bit."
And then they never allow another fair election again. And of course, that SCOTUS would allow it.
Trump can't run again, but it doesn't mean 2028 will be the end of his time in office.
